Frequently Asked Questions.
Who can join Fine Arts programs at WPMS?
All rising 6th Grade students are welcome to join!
My child has no musical experience. Can he/she still be in a music program?
Absolutely! Students do not need to know how to play an instrument prior to joining one of our Fine Arts programs.
When do Fine Arts classes meet?
Orchestra, Band, and Chorus are year long classes that meet every day during school hours. Theater is currently a semester long course, but may become a year long course in the future. Students participate in Fine Arts during their Explore class time.
Can students participate in multiple Fine Arts programs?
Yes! Students have two Explore class periods each day. So students can participate in up to two different Fine Arts programs.
Can students participate in Fine Arts and still play sports, be a cheerleader, etc?
Of course! Our Fine Arts programs meet during the school day (with the exception of scheduled concerts). Most of our sports are after school activities, so this should not pose a conflict. We love seeing our students active and involved!
How many concerts are there?
Typically we have two concerts during the school year. One concert around the winter holidays, and one in the spring. Students and parents will know well in advance when concerts are scheduled.
What instrument can I play?
Orchestra students can play: violin, viola, cello, or bass. Band students can play: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion.
How do I decide what to play?
We usually have a night where students can come try out various instruments to discover which one works best for them (Covid concerns may prohibit us from offering this this year). We encourage you to research the instruments available. We are happy to answer questions and offer assistance to help you find the right instrument for you!
What if I want to play drums?
Drums are a part of percussion. You will have an opportunity to play all of our percussion instruments, not just the drums.
How much do I need to practice?
Practice makes perfect. In Fine Arts programs, practicing is your "homework". Students should be practicing most of the week. Five or six days of solid practice each week, will definitely help you become a better musician.
Are there school instruments available for those with financial needs?
Yes! We have a limited number of school instruments available. So if you're interested, please reach out to our Orchestra or Band director as soon as possible about how we can help.
How do I get an instrument?
First of all, please sign up for the programs you are interested in. This way we can keep you informed about this information. We help you work with local stores for rental and/or purchase of an instrument. If you already have an instrument at home, we encourage you to ensure it is in working condition. We cannot make major repairs, but we definitely help you find someone who can.
